How to Stop a Chronic Cough

How to get rid of a chronic cough.

As there are so many chronic coughs around at the moment, I thought I’d do an article that first of all reminds everyone about prevention, and initial care for when you get a cold or flu, and also reveals what has to be done a little differently if you already have a lingering cough.

This could work even if you’ve been coughing for years.

First of all: Proper Prevention.

These notes from Outlive by Dr Peter Attia are a great place to start for daily living:

“We can prevent 80% of chronic diseases with better lifestyle choices.”

First, prioritize movement. “Exercise is the most powerful tool we have for long-term health.” Take a walk, lift weights, or just get moving.

Focus on nutrition. “Avoid refined carbohydrates. Balance your macronutrients.”

Commit to strength training. “Building muscle isn’t just about appearance—it’s the currency of longevity.”

If you get a virus:

Plenty of protein especially glutamine – so eat beef.

You need glucose! Yes, your immune system needs it – but please not from Mars Bars and Coke! Eat fruit – like organic grapes.

Vitamins A and D are needed in abundance.

More details on what to do for treatment are on my old covid treatment and prevention page – https://www.thepainreliefcentres.co.uk/what-to-do-while-we-wait-for-a-vaccine/

If you have a cough:

In the second week of being ‘ill’ if you have a cough, then this is what to do.

Stop having lots of beef and glutamine.  And start having food high in arginine, and most likely you’ll benefit from supplementation.  Eggs are great at this stage. Have at least 3 a day. And I’d suggest lots of sardines too.

You can take arginine in first week to.

Also, limit your carbs now – the lower the better (so no more fruit) and get calories from good quality fats – fresh coconut, olive oil, even organic butter and ghee.

Take a good quality multivitamin.

Take extra vit A, on top of what is in your diet and multivitamin, but not daily, I’d try 5,000IU -10,000IU 3 x week for 2-4 weeks, up to 3 months.

Extra vit D – up to 20,000 IU per day, preferably premixed with extra vit K2 (unless you are on blood the blood thinner warfarin, in which case jut the vit D)

3g -6g of extra Arginine per day, divide into 2 or 3 doses

1g-2g or tryptophan per day, divide into 2 doses

Up to 2g of NAC, 5 x day

Arginine, tryptophan, and NAC are best taken 5 or more minutes before eating or on empty stomach.

During this period, if there are no contraindications, baby aspirin is an optional add-on to help resolve residual inflammation at any dose within the range found on the label.

My favourite arginine supplement is designed for those with high blood pressure and cardiovascular health issues. Also great for athletes, and tastes great.

NAC – https://www.nutri-dyn.co.uk/product/nac-600/?wpam_id=337

D3/K2 – https://www.nutri-dyn.co.uk/product/d3-5000-with-k2/?wpam_id=337

Multi (I’d have 1 a day if you are going to take the extra vit A, or 3 a day if you are not)) – https://www.nutri-dyn.co.uk/product/essential-multi-iron-free/?wpam_id=337

Vit A – for instance – https://www.nutriadvanced.co.uk/vitamin-a-drops.html  (they also do Vit D3/K2 drops).
