Activator Technique
The ‘Activator’ is a handheld mechanical device that allows highly specific adjustments with very little force. Its proponents claim that the gentle Activator moves joints more than traditional chiropractic techniques. Like Gonstead it has its own way of analysing the spine (this time without X-rays) and is suitable for all ages, from babies to OAPs.
Applied Kinesiology (AK)
Developed by chiropractor Dr George Goodheart, it is now used by chiropractors, osteopaths, dentists, nutritionists, psychologists and many other professions.
This is because AK is not really a treatment technique, it is a diagnostic tool. AK practitioners use muscle testing to determine exactly what is going on in the body (and sometimes the mind) of the patient. It can be used to determine everything from what part of the spine to adjust, and what technique to use, to what dose of nutrients may be required. Like all diagnostic tests it has its limitations and should be used alongside other tests. Please click the following link for more information on Applied Kinesiology
Bio Energetic Synchronization (BEST)
Bio Energetic Synchronization Technique is a very different modern chiropractic technique. Various pressure points on the body are stimulated and held to bring about changes in the body’s electrical field. Very gentle and can bring about profound changes.
Chiropractic Biophysics
Chiropractic Biophysics (CBP) is all about postural realignment and probably has more specific research done on it than any other chiropractic technique.
After assessing your posture treatment is directed at improving it via specific exercises and adjustments with the Chiropractic Biophysics Tool (an automatic version of an Activator – very useful in the clinic) or Drop Table (see Drop Technique). The main aim of this therapy is to improve posture, so will often take 6-18 months to complete a full course.
Diversified
This is the most commonly practiced technique in chiropractic. It is a collection of various manoeuvres used to restore function to your spine.
Drop Technique
Drop Technique, also known as Thompson Technique, or even Clay-Thompson Technique, utilizes a very special treatment couch known as a “Segmental Drop Table”. The use of such a table allows for increased specificity needed for some adjustments, and for lesser force ideal for treating more fragile patients such as pregnant mothers.
Gonstead
Dr Clarence Gonstead was another true health pioneer in the world of chiropractic. His clinic became so popular it had its own hotel, golf course and landing strip! The technique itself centered on a careful assessment of spinal alignment, normally utilising X-rays. Followed by specific adjustments to realign the spine.
The approach is simple and effective, though not suited to all as it requires the use of highly directed force. Please click the following link for more information on the Gonstead technique
Niel-Asher Technique
Simeon Niel-Asher is a London based Osteopath, who in 1997 stumbled across a unique approach to Frozen Shoulder. Previously, Simeon would refuse to treat people with Frozen Shoulder, as he believed it a waste of their money, current techniques being so ineffective.
Then one day he was asked to help his best friend’s mother. After a few months he had made progress and started to see other people with Frozen Shoulder. On one of these patients he tried something new, and it had a remarkable effect – and so began the development of what is now Niel-Asher Technique. Please click the following link for more information on the Niel-Asher technique.
Precision Meridian Technique (PMT)
PMT is an excellent technique for unlocking difficult cases, and ideal as a starting point for some conditions like fibromyalgia. PMT is a synthesis of chiropractic ideas with acupressure and Chinese Pulse Diagnosis. The pulse is used to determine which levels of the spine need correcting, and gentle force is applied with deep breathing to effect a change. The process is repeated 2 or 3 times per session.
Sacro Occipital Technique
A technique developed by Major Bertrand Dejarnet, a chiropractor and osteopath. Dejarnet took the basic theory of cranial osteopathy and expanded upon it. Using a series of gentle holds, and by the positioning of ‘blocks’ under your pelvis it is possible to improve the flow of fluid up and down your spinal cord, relax tension in the sensitive membranes around your brain and nerves, and improve movement in the spinal joints.
Extremely gentle, ideal for those who are wary of having their spine ‘cracked’, or who want a different approach to traditional chiropractic. Dr Pickard is a registered SOT practitioner. In efforts to improve the specificity of chiropractic adjustments, and to minimise the force needed to move the joints, Dr Thompson invented a table with special spring tensed pieces. It means when you are placed on the table and the specific drop piece is popped up underneath you it prevents the chiropractor from using too much force. Please click the following link for more information on the Sacro Occipital Technique.
Total Body Modification (TBM)
This is a complicated treatment system involving chiropractic, acupressure, various soft tissue manipulations, some nutrition and a whole heap of quite frankly unexplainable links between certain muscle tests and problems in the body! It amazes me as to how accurate it can be though, especially in relation to blood sugar problems. Please click the following link for more information on the Total Body Modification Technique.
As and when new natural pain relief techniques are developed we are committed to keeping up with these so we can utilise them in the ultimate natural pain relief “system”.
