In simple terms, there are nerves that go to muscles, organs and skin, and nerves that go from your muscles, organs and skin back aot your brain.

The nerves that go to your organs are also divided into your parasympathetic and your sympathetic nerves.

Have a look and see if you may be stuck predominantly in Fight & Flight, or Rest & Digest.

Your nervous system can also be over aroused, under aroused, fluctuating between the two, or exhausted.

Here’s some common pointers, where to you think you are?

Different spinal nerves also go to different parts of the body.

In general, each nerve has an area of skin it supplies, muscles it supplies, and some kind of organ function. Have a look at the following list and charts and see if you can identify what spinal levels may need attention.

First up some movements:

  • C1/C2: neck flexion/extension
  • C3: Lateral Neck Flexion
  • C4: shoulder elevation
  • C5: Shoulder abduction
  • C6: Elbow flexion/Wrist Extension
  • C7: Elbow extension/Wrist flexion
  • C8: Thumb extension
  • T1: Finger Abduction & Adduction
  • L1/L2: Hip Flexion
  • L3: Knee extension
  • L4: Ankle dorsi-flexion
  • L5: Great toe extension
  • S1: Hip extension/Ankle plantar-flexion/ankle eversion
  • S2: Knee flexion
