I know.
It’s a dramatic title.
But it’s also alarmingly true.
Nearly all of today’s chronic illnesses are caused by a combination of these Four Horsemen. Ignore their insidious infestation into your life at your peril…
I originally made this video as part of a training series (I mentioned The Magnificent 7 Health Strategies). For more details on that scroll down.
Back to the 4 Horsemen
1.Stress
No surprises here I’m sure. 75-90% of GP visits are related to stress, and stress contributes to everything from cancer to back pain.
2.Sedentary lifestyle
A lack of exercise is related to increased cancer, heart disease, depression, dementia, back pain etc.
Spinal motion all by itself is critically important. 90% of the brains stimulation comes from optimal spinal motion. The brain can turn on or off stress and regulates all of your body’s functions.
“90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by movement of the spine.”
-Dr. Roger Sperry (Nobel Prize Recipient for Brain Research)“Approximately 80% of baseline activity of the central nervous system is due to mechanoreceptor input.”
-Kandel and Schwartz “Principles of Neural Science.” 4th Edition (2000)
Related to the spine is poor posture . Poor posture leads to an early grave.
Am Journal of Pain Management – 1994 – posture effects and moderates every physiological function
Sept 2005 Spine article on posture – all measures of health decreased as posture deviated from normal.
3.Malnutrition
Most people associate malnutrition to mean a lack of calories and picture starving children in Africa. However far MORE people die from too many calories combined with a lack of micronutrients. This is what plagues the UK. Proper nutrition, which means supplements as well as a good diet, is the most cost effective way to improve the health of the nation.
Nutrition 17:1 return on investment: Copenhagen Consensus 2008: The world’s best investment
“Today, an adequate supply of nutrients is often unattainable solely through a well-balanced diet, so a targeted, individually designed dietary supplement regime is necessary”
“Improvement in nutritional behavior could not replenish already exhausted nutrient reservoirs. Only supplementation was able to significantly boost nutrient levels and confer beneficial effects on general welfare, physical performance, and resistance to infections”

4.Toxins
This is the most ignored area, yet often the most critical in serious and ‘terminal’ cases. There are at least 700 man made toxins in every adult and child. Toxins cause ¼ of all deaths world wide. They contribute to 86% of chronic disease (cancer, heart disease, dementia, Alzheimer’s etc), and account for rising cancer rates in children.
“A World Health Organization report on the global burden of disease estimated that nearly a quarter of the global disease burden is related to environmental causes.”

Take these apocalyptic warning seriously, as acting upon it really will improve the quality of your life.

After watching Professor Brian Cox’s program for the BBC ‘The 21st Century Race for Space’ I was inspired to make a video on Facebook last week. I’ve now uploaded it to Youtube:
Then 3 days later I was at a conference called ‘Fast Forward Your Business’ (FFYB) which really could have been called Fast Forward Your Consciousness. It would take me half an hour to explain why, so I’ll shorten it to these two snippets
Let’s just say I got home on Sunday even more eager to get this peace process hurried along.
That’s when I stumbled again across International Peace Day, which I remembered I’d read about last year. It’s on the 21st of September. Every year since 1981, set up by the United Nations. You’d think there would be more publicity.
There are plenty of ways to get involved with this, and link up with others, ready to do something about World Peace, which I’ll cover in a moment.
The BIG problem with World Peace, is that it is such a huge issue, that most people can’t even seriously entertain the idea of doing something about it. It’s scary, and seems ridiculous to entertain such thought. It’s taken me 45 years to realise that ‘I’d like to see world peace’ has to be more than ‘a nice idea that I’d love to something about, but I really don’t know what to do, so I won’t even look’.
“By 2020 depression will rank second only to heart disease as the leading cause of disability worldwide.”

The neurochemicals in the limbic system mediate all of one’s feelings and emotions.
A direct connection exists between the nocioceptive reflexes at every level of the spine and the limbic system. Every spinal level has an intimate relationship with the proper functioning of the limbic system. [Blum and Holder 1997]

Without going into too much detail fasting regularly improves your body’s ability to get rid of its ‘sick’ cells, and encourage new ones, and it does this through various mechanisms.
One is that it stimulates a process as autophagy or ‘self-eating’ – think of this as self cleaning and recycling. (See the 2016 Noble Prize).
Another is that it lowers sugar (glucose). Sugar is a very ‘dirty’ energy, but it is easy to burn. Think of it like kindling that gives off lots of foul black smoke.
Another is that it raises the really good energy source, made from fats, known as ketone bodies. Ketones are a really clean energy source, but less easy to produce than sugar. Think of it like solar energy. A lot of installation needed, but once set up it’s much, much easier with no smoke.
And this is the problem. Because sugar is so much more ‘easy’ our body will burn it in preference to fat, no matter how much fat we have.
We can only store 12 hours’ worth of sugar (about 2000 calories), after which our body is forced to break down fat into ketone bodies. Even lean people have 60-80,000 calories of fat they can burn, so you cannot actually ‘starve’ to death for quite some time.
The trouble is, with the myth of ‘breakfast’ having to be early, many of us rarely go more than 10 -13 hours without eating more food that contains sugar. Sugar means any carbohydrate or starch – so the typical breakfast cereal, even muesli or porridge oats, is sugar. Pasta is sugar. Potatoes and rice are sugar. Even proteins from meat and fish, nuts and seeds can be turned to sugar.
Intermittent fasting can be practiced in a number of ways, but the one I focus on for patients is daily, trying to have at least 13, and really at least 15 or 16 hours, from your last intake of calories on one day, before breaking your fast the next day. In reality this often equates to skipping breakfast and eating 2 meals a day. You don’t have to jump right into this, and if you do have a medical condition then you should really consult us first, so we can help ease you into it.
Intermittent fasting can be profoundly beneficial to your health
Dr. Jason Fung, a nephrologist (kidney specialist) with a practice in Canada, has written an important book:
“The Complete Guide to Fasting: Heal Your Body Through Intermittent, Alternate-Day, and Extended Fasting,” co-authored with Jimmy Moore. It details how to implement fasting and overcome some of the most common challenges that might arise, including persistent fears and myths associated with extended water fasting.

Move on to Part 2 of Permanent Perfect Eating
Permanent Perfect Eating for Permanent Weight Loss 2 – Cultured Foods
This is an email I sent to patients today (9/11/16)
Yes, it really is World Freedom Day. (..and health freedom for you if you keep reading)
It was mentioned on ClassicFM this morning, and along with Trump winning the US election, and the recent UK Brexit vote and it started me thinking.
…and then I listened to my favourite morning motivation – Pete Cohen at www.Mi365.me and he had made me think even more.
Pete said that nothing you can do today will change the outcome of the two recent votes.
Life isn’t about what happens outside of us, it’s what we choose to do with these ‘happenings’ that determines our future.
Today you can choose to ‘Vote for Yourself’, you can grab your own headlines.
…and so I thought, ‘What is my manifesto, what would I do if I had millions of pounds to run for office?’
This made me realise that my manifesto needs no multi-million pound campaign. I can start right now.
You see, what I want, is to make my community the healthiest, happiest place to live in Great Britain. I want to make Great Britain the healthiest, happiest country in the world. I want the World to take note, and become a healthier, happier planet for my children to enjoy.
At the moment in the UK, our amazing NHS is under crippling pressure, and prescriptions for anti-depressants and mood altering drugs is spiralling upwards out of control. We are getting sicker and less happy.
But do you know what the shocking truth is?
About 50% of everyone depending on expensive medication could be off it in 6 months with just one change! One FREE change.
This would mean in one year the entire health of the nation would be vastly improved, the NHS saved, and more able to cope with emergencies, which would make us all happier.
So, would you like to know what that one change is?
A change that can improve heart disease, diabetes and dementia?
A change that alters DNA and decreases cancer risks?
A change that can lead to permanent fat loss, better moods, clearer thinking and less pain?
All you have to do is make a choice that will change your life for the better, forever.
I’m already sharing this patients this week as I learned of new discoveries this weekend, but I’m going to get very public about it, especially if you decide to help me save the NHS.
For 7 weeks, every week day, from next Monday, I’ll be doing a ‘Live’ broadcast:
https://www.facebook.com/BodyInBalanceUK/
You don’t have to wait until Monday though, as you can get onto Facebook today as I start sharing my NHS-M: National Health Saving Manifesto, later today – 2pm.
I also plan to hold a talk in Brookmans Park within the next 4 weeks, going into detail on the ‘one change’.
For now, get onto Facebook and tell your family and friends it’s time to vote for themselves.
Look out for another email on Friday from me.
Be Well

Sunblock can be an annoying, yet needed hassle when going on holiday, but is it healthy and is there a better way?
Sunblock also allows your skin to fry in in the oil. Nice!
In truth if you are going to expose your untanned skin to strong Sunshine the healthiest way is to gradually build up a tan, using no blocks – after all, that is what happened for the first 40,000 years of human evolution.
Most people, especially kids, are not patient enough for this.
The problem with sunblock and being near water is that it needs re-applying – even the water resistant stuff.
What I have found is that there is a supplement you can take, that is safe for kids, that boosts health, and decreases the need for sunblock. It’s called Astaxanthin. I give it to my kids 2 x day for a month before going on holiday, then once a day while away. We apply a good quality water resistant sunscrean first thing in the morning and that’s it. If your children are particularly sensitive to the Sun, or really hate suncrean, then astaxanthin is a real help.
I always stock it in the clinic over summer, but its many health benefits mean you can take it all year round.
Watch the video for more details (and you will find out why the flamingos)
If you are in a hurry then let me tell you – get on this detox if you want to burn fat and run faster!

Sounds shocking doesn’t it, but there are some serious researchers who believe that this just might be the case. (see my Danger post)
Although our total lifespan has been increasing over the past 50 years our Healthy Lifespan has hardly changed. While better sanitation and emergency medical care have improved to prevent early deaths from accidents and infectious diseases, modern medicine is relatively useless against correcting the problems we cause ourselves.
What are those problems – most cancer, heart disease, dementia, diabetes and lung disease are all down to the consequences of your own lifestyle choices and therefore almost all preventable.
The sad fact is that even medical doctors are often at a loss to find ways to encourage people to adopt good habits early. This is because of three reasons 1) people often have a lack of respect and love for their own body, 2) they have an underlying belief that as long as they feel fine, there is nothing wrong, and 3) they believe their health problems are for somebody else to solve!
100 years ago these attitudes where not such a serious problem because everyone ate organic food and walked a lot more in clean air. But over time, the food we have available has increasingly become more devoid of nutritional value, and many foods contain what are now termed ‘anti-nutrients’. Our lives have become increasingly more sedentary (which is the leading cause of cancer, back pain, heart disease and diabetes) and there is no drug or operation in the world that can cure a lack of exercise. Our air and homes are becoming ever more polluted.
We now also know that our dietary and lifestyle habits leading up to the conception of our children will affect their DNA! Did you know that? Many of the things we currently think of as ‘genetic’ are actually ‘epigenetic’. This means we have a far greater control over the future health of our children than previously realised.
The sum of all of this is that while we (I’m 43) grew up we were more likely to have been fed real food and got much more exercise and fresh air than our own children. Unfortunately as we grew up, modern life infected us, and got an early start on our own offspring.
Of course there is.
Because of epigenetics and dentists!
Just as dentists realised that the only way they could get adults to brush their teeth was to educate them about the dangers of poor dental hygiene to their kids, we must now educate ourselves about the dangers of poor lifestyle for the sake of our children. We need to teach our kids about daily exercise and food choices. You must lead the way yourself in adopting daily healthy habits and routines.
There is however 2 more problems! First, is your own mindset about health again, and the second is with all the confusion about what constitutes a healthy diet, the right amount of exercise etc, who do you turn to? Especially when what is good for one person may be not so great for another.
The answer lies in studying human psychology and the habits of people who live a long time (especially if those long lived people are in healthcare). Changing your mindset and habits depend on certain processes that can be learned, and there are an ever increasing amount of doctors and wellness coaches that can teach you. The same with lifestyle – there are practitioners that will help you find your own unique optimal eating and exercise plan.
There is also the hope that science may yet discover ever more clever ways of defeating death and disease, but it make sense to empower ourselves, and our children with as many survival skills as possible.
The simplest advice I can give you though is ‘listen to your mother’ – stand up straight, eat more greens, and get more fresh air and exercise!

Because we all have different needs, different personalities, different genetics, different activities etc. there is no such thing as a single ‘best diet’. As we change with time, so should our choice of food.
Here are the three things that will help you the most:
You don’t have to know your blood group to do steps 2 and 3, there is no order. It’s just if you know all three you will be able to select a much more specific set of foods and eating habits that will give you life long healthy results.
Here are some videos that go into more depth, and if you want more personal help then apply to my EPIC Health Coaching
There are more refinements, which I will cover in EPIC Health.
