There is a large body of evidence that suggests inflammation is the root cause of cancer, diabetes, thyroid disorders, arthritis, Alzheimer’s and many other chronic diseases.
It can even be behind the inability to lose weight.

Inflammation of the cell membrane that affects the way the cell communicates, detoxes and will ultimately change gene expression, leading to a diseases of genetic weakness.
There are 3 main contributors that always need to be addressed in order to down-regulate inflammation.
Keeping tight control of your glucose intake is of paramount importance for any anti-inflammation program to be effective as it is a driving force that cannot be remedied by any supplementation or drug protocol. For example, diabetics do not die from diabetes, but from other degenerative conditions. Despite being on medication, 68% of all diabetics die from heart disease, and 50% of diabetics end up with dementia or Alzheimer’s as they age rapidly from the inside out.
This is directly due to the oxidation/inflammation from uncontrolled glucose and insulin.
By the way, grains, not sugar, are the #1 contributor to elevated glucose. Yes, even whole grains. Did you know that 2 pieces of whole grain toast or a bowl of oatmeal raises glucose the same as a can of Coke? This is why a Cellular Healing Diet eliminates ALL GRAINS from the diet UNTIL cellular inflammation is corrected.
What are ‘bad fats’? Well it may surprise you to know that the worse culprit is probably omega 6 fats from all the processed vegetable oils we’ve been told to consume! All the sunflower and rape seed oils we buy in supermarkets to cook in, and that are added to all baked goods.
These oils are causing massive imbalance in the oily make up of our cell membranes and are a major cause of inflammation and artery damage.
You need no worry about eating sunflower seeds though – it’s just the processed oils.
Another inflammatory fat (no surprises) is that found in processed meats and beef from non-grass fed cows.
On the other hand, limited fats from grass fed cows are fine (and contain the beneficial omega 3 oils).

Lastly, toxins, in my opinion, are the biggest driving factor of inflammation today. We have discussed this in every ‘R’ of cellular healing, so I will not get into it here but I will say this: if you do not remove the hidden sources of toxins within your body, the chronic inflammation will NEVER be resolved.
For example, personal care products you use every morning contain, on average, 518 chemicals that are known “hormone disruptors”.
There are also the pollutants and toxins in the air we breath (which kills between 20,000 and 240,000 people in the UK every year), the tap water we drink (a known cause of male infertility) and all the pesticides and herbicides on our fruit and veg.

Arthritis Research UK funded a study that found chronic pain is far more prevalent than anyone thought (unless you happen to be a pain relief specialist like little old me). Over 50% of the adult population is suffering.
While mild chronic pain can be ‘lived with’, up to 14.3% have moderate or ‘severely disabling’ pain. That means more than 1 in 10 people have their life negatively affected, and often in more than one way.
First off, there is the immobility, meaning less enjoyment of once pleasurable activities and hobbies and even inability to do everyday things like getting your socks and shoes on.
Next up is the emotional toll. For some the mental/emotional strain is so great they consider suicide.
Then there are the side effects of medication. There is no such thing as a safe pain killer or anti-inflammatory drug. Some can prove fatal with just one dose, but all have long term effects either on the liver, kidneys, brain, bowel, stomach, immune system or joints. Medication leads to side effects and more medication and often a shorter life. It is a common occurrence that when elderly patients are hospitalised with an ‘unknown illness’ it is found to be the side effects to the 4 or 5 drugs they are on that proves to be more fatal than the actual conditions they are being treated for.
What is the answer? Where did all this pain come from?
What the study did not look into was what is causing all this pain and disability and what the way forward may be. This is where my 20 years of experience and continued research may shed some answers.
Many of the chronic pain conditions suffered by our aging population actually have their route causes in earlier life – even childhood and child birth.
The development of poor posture is a big one, and this really starts at the age of 5 when we go to school and get told to ‘sit still’. Our spine, our nervous system and our bodies are NOT meant to be still at 5. In order to fully develop a healthy brain and nervous system, and a good upright posture, you need to be fully mobile.
This is why we offer free annual posture checks for our patients children from age 3 – 10, and why we would love to perform posture checks in nearby primary schools.
A second huge, under diagnosed cause of chronic pain is toxic accumulation. This again starts in childhood. Even the safest pain killer – paracetamol – given to children as Calpol, can cause lifelong health issues with as little as one dose! Asthma, eczema, kidney problems, liver toxicity and increased diabetes have all been linked with levels of paracetamol currently thought safe in Calpol.
I have written about the dangers of Calpol in the past, and have more extensive articles on toxicity planned. The toxic cause I’d like to highlight today is ‘polypharmacy’ – the use or 2 or more drugs in a single patient.
Too many people are mistakenly being prescribed more drugs than they need. 66% of people suffer bad reactions, some so severe that even properly prescribed medicine is a leading, preventable cause of death in the UK. 40% of the elderly are actually given the WRONG prescription. Ideally you should have regular full reviews with your GP. Next best is the pharmacy that dispenses the drugs. Often GP’s and pharmacists are too busy to fully check prescriptions, so we offer our local community this free service. Fibromyalgia is a complex syndrome, characterised by body wide pain, chronic fatigue and ‘brain fog’. This is just the 3 main symptoms, there are as many as 200. There is no known cause, and no known cure.
My own belief is that fibromyalgia, like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and the rest of our western chronic diseases have many causes, and the art of helping these patients is in understanding each individual case.
Having said that, there now seems to be an explanation for the vast amount of symptoms and the common link between them. The link is a molecule called AMPK. (Adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase).
AMPK is needed for many different processes including energy production (via your mitochondria) and pain control.
In certain cells of fibromyalgia patients AMPK is not being ‘activated’, so this disables energy production and promotes pain and inflammation.
What is not yet known is why AMPK is not activated, but it seems possible it is to do with environmental toxins, and general strain on our detoxification systems – mainly the liver and kidneys. Stress also has a detrimental effect on at least brain AMPK. ( The role of oestrogen in pain, liver function, mitochondria, and why women suffer more with fibromyalgia will be the topic of another post soon).
There are a number of ways to safely and effectively promote AMPK activation. One is via a calorie restriction diet (which is part of our detox protocol). Another is to exercise (which if you have fibromyalgia is unlikely to happen). A third is to take a Chinese medicinal mushroom called ganoderma lucidum.
There is a drug (called metformin) used for diabetes that can also activate AMPK but it can lower B12 (not good for fibromyalgia) can cause lactic acidosis (not good for fibromyalgia) and can cause a long list of side effects.
A recent study has shown that 6g a day of ganoderma for 6 weeks improves the physical fitness of women with fibromyalgia.

Parents are right to be concerned about the hours their children spend looking down at their phone. And of course it’s not just children on mobile phones – it’s you too most likely.
The forward head posture caused by continual mobile phone and now tablet use is going to be responsible for more than just neck pain and headaches.
Text Neck can cause or contribute to upper back pain, shoulder pain and far worse.
Rene Caillet, Director of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Southern California points out these facts about forward head posture:
Forward head posture leads to loss of optimal spinal motion and function.
Optimal spinal motion is necessary for endorphin production (the chemical mediators that help reduce pain). Without this endorphin production the rest of the body tissues can become more sensitised to pain.

Forward head posture can cause the entire gastrointestinal tract to be affected, particularly the large intestine. Loss of good bowel function and evacuation are a common sequel associated with this postural weakness and may lead to toxic effects.
