Sacroiliac Joint Exercises for Low Back Pain Relief

Exercises for Sacroiliac Joint Pain Relief

The sacroiliac joints are a common cause of low back pain, mainly because of our sedentary life styles.  The best way to avoid sacroiliac joint problems is to avoid sitting and spend plenty of time walking.  I know this is easier said than done!

If you do suffer low back pain, then there are hundreds of exercises that may help, so it is important to get a diagnosis before trying any.  If you know you have sacroiliac joint problems it is also useful to know if you have unstable (or hypermobile) joints, or stiff ones.

Here are a few exercises to try:

A Common Cause of Low Back Pain- the Sacroiliac Joints

Sacroiliac Joint Pain and SI Syndrome

Sacroiliac joint pain, often labelled low back, pelvic, or even hip pain by the lay person is possibly the most common pain in the body.

Situated to either side of the base of the spine (see diagram) the sacroiliac joints (often shortened to SI joints) hold the pelvis together and provide a firm foundation for the spinal column. The joints are held together by thick ligaments that encapsulate the whole joint – so it is possible to sprain both the back and front portions, either separately or together.

sacroiliac jointsAt the beginning of the twentieth century the sacroiliac joints were thought to be the cause of most low back pain. Then with the discovery of ‘slipped’ discs the diagnosis of sacroiliac sprains became unfashionable. In the eighties and nineties the use of MRI revealed many people to have bulging discs yet no symptoms, as well as people with all the symptoms attributed to a bulging disc – but no evidence on MRI. Now the SI joints seem to be recognised once again.

What Causes Back Pain

Low back pain has multiple causes, from mechanical issues in the low back itself, to problems in the feet, hips or knees, the neck, the jaw, or even nutritional deficiencies. Even if the back pain is being caused by the low back itself you have to know is it a ‘slipped disc’, is it the joints, is it muscle weakness, is it muscle tightness, is it the ligaments? And so on.
So the quickest way for you to find relief for your back pain is to find someone who can assess and give advice on all of those causes.

An Example of How Spinal Manipulation Can Help

This is what we do, asses what is causing your back pain, and then offer help as needed.

Perhaps the best way to illustrate why spinal manipulation is the smart choice for you, is to share the recent story (July 2014) about Andrew Lloyd Webber’s low back pain.

No matter what you may think of his music, millions of others undoubtedly enjoy his work – who hasn’t heard of The Phantom of the Opera? And it’s pretty likely he has a few hit shows left to write, so it would be a loss to humanity if he passed away any time soon.

Last year though, it came as a great shock to find out that the great Andrew Lloyd Webber was thinking of committing suicide!

Why was he thinking of ending it all?

Because of his severe, never ending back and leg pain.

After “countless medical procedures” as Lloyd Webber put it, he was still in constant pain. The official count was 14 – 2 surgeries and 12 anesthetic injections. All failed.

So after putting up with going nowhere he actually contemplated assisted death at a clinic in Europe.

Luckily, he decided to try chiropractic (a form of spinal manipulation) first.

After some gentle adjustments to his whole body, and not just his back and leg, Andrew Lloyd Webber started to recover, came out of his suicidal depression, and got back to life.

So, even if you have had failed back surgery, there is a chance that chiropractic can help.

Low Back Pain

Are You Suffering From Lower Back Pain?
You are not alone…

Lower back pain is without a doubt the most disabling and aging condition that strikes almost everyone at some point.  In practice it is the one condition that makes everyone say “I feel like an old man (or woman)”.

For our Free Low Back Pain Report go here – Finchley Chiropractic Clinic

Here’s some background to the back pain problem in the UK:

  •  Back pain results in over 80 million days off work
  •  80% of people will be affected by back pain at some point in their lives
  •  Back problems occur equally in sedentary work and manual work
  •  Back problems create 7 million visits to the GP
  •  Most are in the 16-44 age range
  •  33,000 back accidents are related to the workplace
  •  Problems reoccur in 80% of the cases
  •  80% of “VDU” workers have back problems

So if you are suffering back pain.. you are in in the “majority” and the good news is chiropractic can really help, both in the short term by relieving the pain and in the longer term, prevent re-occurrence and maybe in the meantime give you mobility you thought you had lost.

What causes back pain?

Unsurprisingly, as back pain effects so many people the causes of back pain are many. As we are only “given” one spine it makes sense to look after it.  Here are some of the more common causes:

What is the solution?

Government Studies reveal lower back pain sufferers have received very good news lately.  Major studies from the US, Canada and UK have reaffirmed what chiropractic patients have been telling their friends with back pain for years: “Why don’t you see my chiropractor? You’ll probably get better much faster than from drugs or surgery- and it’s safer too.

What the British Researchers found

In 1991 the Medical Research Council sent shock-waves through the health care system when a definite public pronouncement established chiropractic as one of the preferred and most effective methods of care for acute adult low back pain.

“Chiropractic almost certainly confers worthwhile long term benefits in comparison with hospital out patient management”.

If all these patients were referred for chiropractic instead of hospital treatment, the annual cost would be about four million pounds.

Our results suggest that there might be a reduction of some 290,000 days in sickness absence during 2 years, saving about 13 million in output and 2.9 million in social security payments”. British Medical Journal, June 2nd 1990 –

Do GP’s recommend chiropractic?

In 1999 The Royal College of General Practitioners updated their guidelines for the treatment of acute low back pain. The main points from these guidelines may shock you, those relevant to chiropractors are:

  • Not to recommend the use of bed rest as a treatment method, as it is not as effective as alternative treatments for pain relief and likely to make back pain worse.
  • Early intervention is essential for effective management and full recovery.
  • Spinal manipulation is recommended for patients who are failing to return to normal activities.
  • Also add some of the What science says  parts from existing website

Does Chiropractic work in severe cases of Chronic Spinal Pain?

The July 2003 issue of Spine compared three different types of care to see which was most effective.

The treatments compared were:

  • Medicine (pain killers)
  • Acupuncture and
  • Chiropractic.

The study was conducted in Australia.

The results: chiropractic the most effective, acupuncture second and drugs third.

Chiropractic was an amazing three to four times more likely to bring about recovery than the other two treatments.

A second bonus was the measured overall increase in health.  While acupuncture and pain killer patients had measured 15% and 18% increases in general health, those undergoing chiropractic care had an increase of 47%.

Lower Back Pain Treatment at Home

Having treated lower back pain for almost 20 years, I’ve learned a thing or two about what can be done at home, right now, to try and ease your back pain.

First off though, I have to warn you that low back pain can be a very serious condition, especially if it lasts more than 3 days – and immediately if you have tingling or numbness (especially around your buttocks or groin), or if you loose bowel or bladder control.

The Cause of Fibromyalgia

TRANSCRIPT of ‘Chronic Pain Relief Program’

Hello, it’s Chris Pickard at Body In Balance, and today I’m going to be sharing with you the chronic pain relief program that we use at the clinic and I’m going to show you how you can actually start it for free as well as without even having to come in.

Before we start though, make sure that you subscribe to the channel to keep up to date with the latest health findings to do with pain relief and living a long healthy life, and make sure you hit the bell so that you get notified when the next video is live.

So chronic pain relief. Let’s start with actually what is chronic pain? Chronic pain is really any pain that’s been with you for six weeks or longer. It doesn’t have to be a bad pain. It’s just a pain that’s been there a long time, and that’s what chronic pain really means.

If you’re watching this, you’ve probably had pain for a lot longer than six weeks and you’re desperately trying to find out what is going on, what you can do. You’re probably sick and tired of just getting painkillers and nowhere with normal medical advice.

Now, here’s the first thing you need to know about chronic pain, pain that’s been with you for more than six weeks. It’s already starting to change your brain. So no matter whether you’ve got knee pain from arthritis, whether you’ve got a back problem, whether you’ve got fibromyalgia, if you’ve had pain for more than six weeks it’s changing your brain. This is one of the most important areas to actually work on. No matter where your pain is, your brain is changing. People in chronic pain have twice the deterioration of the grey cells of the grey matter of your brain than people who are not in pain. It’s very important to start working on brain health. Again, I’ll show you how to do that.

But where does chronic pain come from? There’s usually, I apologize for the lighting, three major causes of any pain. You have the sort of the structural, physical things going on, so knee pain. Very often if you have knee pain, you go to physiotherapists, they look at knee, you go to someone for back pain, they look at the back, if neck pain or headaches, they look at the neck or the head. If you’ve got fibromyalgia and all over body pain, they don’t know what to do. They just give you pain killers, opioids, things like that.

But let’s go back to structure. Let’s look at just knee pain. So for instance, knee pain. If you’re just looking at the knee and you’ve just had therapy on the knee and it’s not getting better. Why might this not be getting better? Well, one is because a lot of knee pain is actually secondary to stuff happening in your hip. The muscles in your hip and your low back support your knee, and if they’re weak you’re going to have extra pressure on your knee. If you have a foot problem that can be aggravating the knee. If you have a balance problem that could be originating from your neck or your ear or your jaw, that’s going to put extra pressure on your knee as well.

When you’re looking at the structure of the body, you actually have to make sure the entire body gets checked, not just the painful area and getting these other areas fixed could then fix the area of chronic pain.

But you then have chemical causes. This could be either not enough of the right nutrients you need for a bone to heal, like your knee, or you could be eating things actually rip cartilage from your knee. If you’ve got a chronic knee problem, you need to get your whole structure looked at. But you also need to look at what’s happening chemically. Are you actually eating all the right things that will actually regrow the knee, bring down inflammation, or are you eating things actually increase inflammation in the joints, that actually decrease your chances of rebuilding your cartilage and making it as strong as possible?

This is the same for this is really, really important for things like fibromyalgia as well because there are so many things that people with fibromyalgia are doing that are actually increasing inflammation in their body and they’re not putting enough of the right things that decrease inflammation, especially at the level of the brain where a lot, this is where all pain is felt.

And then you have the emotional stress as well. When you are stressed it switches off the functioning of your body so you can’t actually heal properly. It doesn’t matter how much structure it gets looked after, it doesn’t matter what’s happening here. If you’re chronically stressed your body is going to switch off its healing mechanisms. You really have to look at all three of these areas and you have to keep in mind that the brain, looking a bit like a boxing glove, is really looked after as well. You need to start hitting from the centre of the brain, the nervous system and looking at all of these structures. So that’s great.

Now you’ve got something to do, but what do you do? Well, first of all, you’ve got to find someone that looks after structure and brain-based balance, brain-based wellness rather, and also the nutritional chemical side of things and stress. I’ll give you a link down below where you can actually look at the brain balance program. I’ll give you links to some of the chemical things that you need to take care of, especially, especially if you have something like fibromyalgia, something called NRF2. Don’t worry, I’ll put the link down below in the directions, in the description.

But here’s how you can get started free step by step. We have a seven days to less pain program. Why seven days? Because we have had people who’ve had years of chronic pain actually start to reverse that in as little as seven days, and seven days really is the absolute minimum that it takes.

I like to introduce some of the concepts like starting to eat properly, hydrating properly. You’re probably getting it wrong. The secret ingredient in this that will help NRF2 and brain inflammation. I’m going to show you why a pair of headphones, you don’t need these bits. Just how a hat pair of headphones can actually help you decrease your chronic pain. That’s all in the seven days to less pain program. I’ll put the link in the description below. I’ll put the link in the comments as well at the top and I’ll make sure there’s a link in the video as well that you can just click on to sign up for seven days. It’s completely free for you to listen and act upon as well. Thank you for listening. Be well, spread the word that chronic pain relief is available.

Types of Neck Pain

The second most common complaint among patients, neck pain, can occur in the middle of the neck, either side and/or can extend to the shoulders and/or chest area. The most obvious symptom of issues within the neck area is obviously pain in that location, but it can also lead to other issues such as headaches, difficulty sleeping or it can even lead to pain in other areas of the body.

Neck pain can sometimes be traced back to a specific injury or it could be due to poor posture, anxiety or a whole host of other causes. That’s why it’s important to get checked out to try and find out what the cause is rather than just masking the pain.

If you have acute or persistent neck pain then give us a call today to book an appointment on
